As you may have guessed, I love the Northern Lights (also known as Aurora Borealis) and I had to post this terrific video that was posted on Facebook. It’s taken from somebody’s deck in a town called Gillam, Manitoba in northwestern Manitoba. The video is short, but excellent.
Strange stuff you see every day when you ride the trains.
Update: A New York teen who was living at a homeless shelter when she was picked as a semifinalist in a prestigious national science competition has moved into her new home.
Samantha Garvey and her family were handed the keys to their house in Bay Shore, Long Island on Saturday.
Garvey says she was “overwhelmed” by the support and generosity she’s received since being named a semifinalist in the Intel Science contest last month. She wasn’t among the 40 finalists.
The Brentwood High School senior and her family had been living in a homeless shelter when her two years of research on a mussel population garnered her accolades.
Suffolk County officials helped find a three-bedroom home where the family could live.

This whole project has been an amazing experience. The two of us became friends through Vimeo and explored a shared interest in timelapsing Yosemite National Park over an extended period of time. We’d like to expand this idea to other locations and would appreciate any suggestions for a future project.

This was a great segment with Chris Hayes on the Jan. 18, 2012 show, the night of the SOPA and PIPA protest where many web sites shut down or showed their opposition to the legislation. What’s terrific about video is that it explains how this flawed legislation got as far as it did. The explanation is so simple that many, like me, missed it. Politicians don’t understand the internet.
